How early could a premature baby survive before modern medicine?

I'm writing a story set in Roman times. I am trying to work out how early my character could give birth with the baby surviving (although the mother is going to die). As she is going to labour early a breech birth might be likely - how might someone go about delivering a child in those circumstances?
