How long to finish reading a book for a beginner?

I've just started reading a book that i'm determined to finish (i've never had much interest in reading). It's around 300 pages long and has a really slow start.

I read at an average speed I think.

Also, another question. If you think the book is boring, do you put it down or keep on reading?
