What are the values of keeping a reef only aquarium?

I've been building up an interest of reef aquariums lately and wonder just how good a reef-only aquarium is. By that I mean an absence of fish and having only corals and crustaceans.
I love the idea of owning a 30Gallon tank with just a few crustaceans in it and watching the small biocube evolve. Is there anyone on here who has achieved something like this? If so, how rewarding is it and what invertebrates are compatible with which others?
